The 2024 fashion calendar has been a delectable menu of beauty trends that are retro, realistic, and effortlessly striking. Smudged makeup and statement hair, teamed with dopamine eyeshadow are some of the artsy aesthetics we have seen at various runways across the globe.

Maison Margiela

The Big Apple, New York Fashion Week saw plaits woven for extra impact this season, beginning with the taut French braids at Robert Wun. Snaking braid duets came accompanied by confectionary twists at the crown, those furnished with neatly curled edges.

The takeaway? We’re trying, but never too hard. Ahead, beauty trends that have caught our eye on the 2024 runways thus far.

Glass Skin

The beauty world is far from over the porcelain-like skin that Pat McGrath created for the Maison Margiela couture show. So naturally, there have been lots of juicy, high-gloss complexions in the mix. The trend was also seen at Erdem’s AW24 during London Fashion Week.

Dopamine Eyeshadow
Dior

For the 2024 runways, the placement has shifted from an all-over wash to a more concentrated flash of colour in the inner corners of the eyes. Think dopamine colours such as hot pink and violet. At Dior, rose petals served as inspiration, but rather than lean into a pretty, dainty iteration, makeup artist Peter Philips opted for a cool, editorial vibe. Models revealed floating splashes of hot pink.

Doll-Esque Lashes
Alice + Olivia

There was no shortage of lash drama at New York Fashion Week’s Autumn/Winter runway shows. Leading the pack was the Marc Jacobs show, which served up an extreme interpretation of ‘60s-era Diana Ross, including doll-worthy lashes. A more pared-back riff on Swinging Sixties lashes came by way of Alice and Olivia.

Afro Hair
Marc Jacobs

Afro has been a recurring theme on various runways throughout fashion month. Call it the Mob Wife trend effect, or just the eternal appeal of larger-than-life beauty on the catwalks. It all began with bold updos at Marc Jacobs, which were hyperbolised ode to vintage fashion.

Statement Braids
Thom Browne

Knots, loops, and extreme length. Throughout fashion months, there were many fierce and imaginative takes on braided styles. The pigtail braids defied the laws of physics at Thom Browne, where they did a total of 180, floating upside down in the air model heads.
