After the glitz and glamour of fashion week, a new colour trend is on the horizon: red. Usurping the Valentino pink that dominated the whole of 2022, red seems to be taking over the fashion streets and catwalks. At least twelve designers at New York Fashion Week (NYFW) gave red the greenlight to reign as the soon-to-be-everywhere shade of 2023. Some of the most notable looks, such as fluid trousers and sharp-shouldered blazer dresses shown at Theory, Jason Wu, Alice + Olivia, and Alejandra Alonso Rojas, took the sophisticated, structured suit sets received by street style and injected them with a fresh palette. Most of the red looks at fashion week were showcased in orange undertones, with a select few leaning towards deeper hues. Regardless of the shade, the pieces were still saturated and bright enough to stop traffic.

One could argue that the colour red had already been buzzing in the streets before fashion month. Pop superstar and style icon Rihanna adorned a silk jersey catsuit in a crimson-red hue during her sensational Super Bowl performance earlier this year. The one-piece was paired with a sculpted leather corset, and a cotton flight suit layered over unzipped to show off her baby bump. On her feet, Rihanna wore matching scarlet red MM6 Maison Margiela x Salomon sneakers. Moreover, who can forget Doja Cat being adorned in literal head-to-toe red at the Schiaparelli Haute Couture show?

Alluding power and boldness, red makes a strong visual impact in the collections of designers and fashionistas. The hue is a showstopper that makes a daring statement. Vermillion, scarlet, cherry, and crimson are the shades of the trendy colour that seem to be dominating collections of fashion houses such as Gucci.

Additionally, red looks fashionable on rich fabrics such as lace, silk, velvet, and chiffon. The hue is also a good choice for fashion accessories such as purses, shoes, and scarves. We have compiled a catalogue of images to guide you on your red shopping spree.
