As we have established from fashion houses across the globe, red is the colour of choice for 2023. However, the hue’s newfound popularity has not replaced its dopamine-inspired predecessor – pink. Dazzling, electrifying pink looks have been just about everywhere since last year, from the runway to the red carpet. It is impossible to scroll through social media without coming across the hot pink aesthetic that social media users have aptly dubbed Barbiecore. Moreover, celebrities such as the Queen of Rap, Nicki Minaj have been embracing the bold hue for over a decade now.

Barbiecore was inspired by the iconic Mattel doll, Barbie who has always been a representation of women’s empowerment. A style icon since the ‘50s, Barbie has been setting trends with her pink aesthetic for multiple generations. Barbiecore represents the idea that fun, brightly coloured and over-the-top looks do not have to be reserved for haute couture.

The hot pink colour first popped up at luxury fashion house, Valentino’s Pink PP collection during the Paris Fashion Week in March 2022. Named after creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli, the collection trailblazed the Barbiecore trend, which resulted in many style icons embracing it.

Dress please

You can’t do Barbiecore without a head-turning pink dress. Whether you want a figure-hugging maxi, a glittery mini, or a shiny satin slip, there’s something out there for you.

A girl can never have too many platforms

We might never have a shoe collection that stacks up to Barbie’s, but that doesn’t mean pink platforms shouldn’t belong in your closet. Top off a head-to-toe Barbiecore moment with pink sunnies and a handbag to match.

Athletic girls are up

While minidresses and platform shoes are quintessential Barbiecore aesthetics, the trend can also be dressed down when accessorised correctly. Are you more into athleisure? Channel your inner Malibu Barbie with some sporty picks. These pops of colour make it easier to embrace the trend when you’re not quite ready to commit to a full look.

The bright and bold hue is more than just another colour trend. It is yet another display of society’s obsession with nostalgia that has propelled major pop cultural comebacks over the past decade. In fashion we’ve seen Juicy Couture tracksuits, geometric sunglasses, platform shoes, and chokers – all things Y2K and ’90s inspired. We love reliving these eras and moments – and there’s no one quite like Barbie who can mirror the times.
