After weeks of great anticipation among football enthusiasts, Orlando Pirates Football Club, affectionately known as the Buccaneers have unveiled their 2023/24 playing kits! Envisioned by internationally acclaimed fashion designer, Thebe Magugu, the Buccaneers’ playing kits for the upcoming football season exude their traditional design, with an ultra-modern twist.
The groundbreaking collaboration is in partnership with popular sportswear brand, Adidas who have been a long-serving sponsor of Orlando Pirates.
Boasting their iconic emblem and skull imagery, the kits are a reflection of the football club’s heritage. Thebe Magugu utilised the Buccaneers’ tradition to unearth a classic black home kit, as well as a pistachio green away kit. Thebe Magugu added his Midas touch on both the home and away kits by infusing Orlando Pirates’ skull and crossbones logo in his signature contemporary line-work design.
Orlando Pirates and Thebe Magugu’s latest collaboration is part of the global fashion industry trend of local designers doing relevant things for their home countries – particularly in sports. The trailblazing venture follows Paper’s Ajax kit which paid homage to their Dutch roots, as well as British designer Stella McCartney representing Arsenal. Orlando Pirates x Thebe Magugu’s collaboration is joining the global conversation of the relationship between sports and fashion.
