Balenciaga is entering a new creative chapter with the appointment of British designer Martine Rose as its new Creative Director. Announced by Kering on 6 November 2026, Rose will officially take up the Paris-based role on 16 November, bringing her distinctive perspective to one of fashion’s most influential houses.

The appointment marks a historic moment for Balenciaga, with Rose becoming the first woman to lead the house as Creative Director in its 109-year history. It also marks a return to familiar territory, having previously worked as a menswear consultant under Demna between 2015 and 2018.

Since founding her eponymous label in 2007, Rose has built a reputation for challenging conventional ideas of fashion and masculinity. Rooted in London’s underground music scenes, football culture and diverse subcultures, her work explores the relationship between clothing, identity and self-expression.

Her signature approach combines unconventional proportions, oversized silhouettes and reinterpretations of traditional menswear. Rather than following established fashion codes, Rose draws on everyday dress and cultural influences to create collections that feel distinctly individual.

Her influence extends beyond her own label, with collaborations including Nike, Clarks and Supreme further cementing her place in contemporary fashion. Her designs have also attracted a high-profile following, with artists such as Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar and A$AP Rocky among those who have worn her creations.

Her return to Balenciaga brings a fresh dimension to a relationship that began during Demna’s tenure. Now overseeing the creative direction of the entire house, Rose will have the opportunity to translate her subculture-driven design language into the world of luxury fashion.

Commenting on her appointment, Kering CEO Luca de Meo praised Rose’s fearless approach to creativity and her understanding of contemporary culture. Rose, in turn, described the role as a privilege, acknowledging Balenciaga’s rich creative heritage and expressing her commitment to shaping its next chapter.

Founded by Cristóbal Balenciaga in 1917, the house has spent more than a century challenging conventional ideas of silhouette, construction and couture. With Rose at the helm, its next chapter brings together an established fashion legacy and a designer whose work has consistently pushed the boundaries of contemporary dress.

The fashion world will now be watching as Martine Rose begins her new chapter at Balenciaga.
