Pat McGrath crafted show-stopping looks for the runway inspired by the ultra-shiny finish of porcelain dolls and the recent trend of “glass skin.”
If you are a day one couture enthusiast, you probably know that legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath and Paris Haute Couture are an artistic match made in heaven. The makeup maestro is once again making fashion press headlines with her latest viral look at the Maison Margiela haute couture spring 2024 show.
Not new to the limelight, McGrath covered music sensation Doja Cat in head-to-toe red crystals – a look that was hailed as boundary-breaking in the beauty industry. The innovative makeup artist has changed the face of beauty, employing unique, brightly colored techniques and eschewing brushes for her hands. However, the makeup artist might have officially outdone herself by transforming models into porcelain dolls, featuring ultra-shiny smooth skin, pencil-thin eyebrows, and colourful painted makeup.
The models boasted impossibly glowy skin, stunning eyeshadow, penciled-in brows, and bold lips, echoing the ‘20s look McGrath last crafted for John Galliano’s Dior Autumn/Winter show in 2009. Inspired by the show’s location, which took place under a full moon by the Seine, the makeup artist made sure each model’s glazed skin indeed looked as if kissed by the moonlight.
The artistic look has gone viral on social media, with haute couture lovers marveling at how McGrath recreated the look and texture of porcelain skin.
In a press release, Pat McGrath says she was inspired by creative director John Galliano’s collection, which “examines the ritual of dressing and the clothes we wear as a physical expression of emotion.” McGrath bleached models’ brows (we love a Queen who’s well-versed in current beauty trends) before drawing on thin arches to mimic the features of a porcelain doll. To create a painted-to-makeup look, she used the Divine Blush: Legendary Glow Colour Balm in Peach Lotus or Sunkissed Seduction on cheeks to apply a doll-like flush and an array of jewel tones. For lips, Pat McGrath layered on shades of blood red or black using the MatteTrance Lipstick in Guinevere and McMenamy before topping things off with the Lust: Gloss in Nude Negligee.
