Inspired by childhood memories beside a farm pond, Gert-Johan Coetzee’s Autumn/Winter 2027 collection explores identity, transformation and the beauty of looking beneath the surface, while marking a new chapter for the designer’s bridal offering.

Long before the flashing cameras and the spectacle of the runway, Gert-Johan Coetzee found inspiration in a quieter setting: a farm pond where water, light and movement captured the imagination of a young boy. Years later, that childhood memory has become the foundation of Reflections, the South African designer’s Autumn/Winter 2027 collection, unveiled at South African Fashion Week on 25 October.

Rooted in nostalgia yet looking firmly towards the present, the collection explores the distance between who we once were and who we eventually become. For Coetzee, revisiting the past is not simply an exercise in sentimentality, but an opportunity to examine the experiences and ambitions that shape our identities. “This collection returns to the simplicity of where my imagination first took shape,” he says.

That simplicity finds sophisticated expression through a collection built around contrasts. Drawing on the reflective qualities of water, Reflections considers the relationship between what is visible and what lies beneath, questioning how closely the image we present to the world aligns with who we are. “Water mirrors what sits on the surface, but beneath it lies infinite depth,” Coetzee explains. “With ‘Reflections,’ we translate that duality into garment design, balancing strength with vulnerability, and bold structural tailoring with organic, flowing movement.”

The concept unfolds through a considered interplay of silhouette, colour and texture. Aquatic cobalts and teals evoke the shifting tones of water, before the palette moves into earthy greens, rust hues and graphic houndstooth. The transition creates a visual dialogue between the natural landscape that inspired the collection and the more structured elements of the garments, giving the offering a sense of depth and movement.

Texture further defines the collection’s identity. Liquid-like textiles bring fluidity to the silhouettes, while sculptural forms introduce a sense of drama. Scale-like petal appliqués, floor-length fringe, pom-pom jackets and intricate hand-embroidered details add dimension, drawing attention to the craftsmanship behind each look. Organic movement meets bold tailoring, creating a wardrobe that embraces both softness and strength without compromising on visual impact.

Rather than treating these contrasts as opposing forces, Coetzee allows them to coexist. The result reflects the complexities of identity itself, where confidence can sit alongside uncertainty and vulnerability can be a form of strength. It is this tension between opposing qualities that gives Reflections its emotional resonance, elevating the collection beyond its visual appeal.

The showcase also marked a significant milestone for the fashion house with the introduction of a dedicated range of couture-inspired bridal gowns. Romantic ballgowns brought the presentation to a fitting close, revealing a new dimension of Coetzee’s design language while expanding the brand’s presence in luxury wedding wear.

The move into bridalwear feels like a natural extension of the designer’s established appreciation for intricate embellishment, expressive silhouettes and couture craftsmanship. Wedding gowns occupy a uniquely personal place in fashion, often becoming part of the memories and milestones that shape a person’s story. In that sense, the new range shares an affinity with Reflections, a collection grounded in the relationship between clothing, identity and the moments that define us.

“Introducing our dedicated bridal line alongside this collection feels like a natural evolution, bringing couture artistry and emotional depth into the bridal space,” Coetzee says. The addition signals an expansion of the house’s offering while creating room for its signature craftsmanship to be explored through the lens of bridal dressing.

Ultimately, Reflections returns to a deceptively simple idea: understanding who we are sometimes requires us to look back at where we began. The childhood pond that once offered Coetzee a place for quiet observation has become a metaphor for the layers of identity that exist beyond the surface. Through sculptural silhouettes, tactile embellishments and a romantic bridal debut, the designer transforms that personal memory into a collection that feels both introspective and assured.

With Reflections, Gert-Johan Coetzee invites us to reconsider the relationship between our past and present selves, reminding us that transformation does not erase our beginnings. Sometimes, they are precisely where the most compelling stories start.
