Fashion Trends That Are Going to Dominate Autumn 2023

Fashion month was monopolised by ultra-modern exhibitions from some of the world’s leading luxury brands. The fashion extravaganza laid out the blueprint for this year’s autumn and winter fashion trends. Historically, autumn has always brought about a slew of style options that we put away during the sweltering summer heat. Unlike other seasons, autumn is not all about blink-and-you-missed-it trends. It is about meticulously choosing style ensembles that can be worn for many fashion eras to come.

With that said, we hereby present to you a list of fashion trends that will help you stay on trend this autumn – courtesy of the Fashion Weeks hosted by renowned fashion hubs such as New York.

Metallic Mode
High-shine embellishments and fabrications have stolen the spotlight over the past few seasons. During New York Fashion Week (NYFW), it was hard to ignore that silver and gold have increased as mainstays in partywear on runways. Moreover, the trend seems to have also translated into daywear through coats – as exhibited by luxury fashion house, Coach. If you’re looking to take the metallic moment one step further, try it out in soft colours such as lilac, lime, or rose pink.

Stripes
Stripes are a timeless pattern and have never truly gone out of style. They still have a connotation of acting bold and daring which are both vital characteristics in the fashion industry. Stripes attract and play with the eye; they will always stand out in a room filled with bold colours.

Shoulder Show
Yes, we’re still wearing off-shoulder styles in autumn 2023. Throwing it back to the good old days (the 2010s, specifically), fashion month introduced the décolleté displaying necklines for any occasion. Fashion house Carolina Herrera presented the silhouette with a romantic twist. Therefore, whether you’re hitting the party circuit or going on a date with a special someone, the off-shoulder style might come in handy.

Seeing Red
Dopamine dressing: the rise of dressing to boost your mood has been a significant shift in the way we think about clothes. With colour being the most powerful tool in feel-good fashion, it is no surprise that the colour red has made a formidable comeback. In a rebuttal to the popularity of pink in 2022, this year we’re seeing a return to the power of red. In its latest iteration, the hue has a neon touch that takes well to various fabrics such as silk.

Dresses over pants
Y2K fashion may no longer be the buzziest aesthetic of the moment, but its influence remains on the runways through the dress-over-pants style. The trend lends itself well to tunics and dresses in a sheer fabrication or with a hemline that offers waterfall ruffles for extra opulence. As we see this look evolve, we can look forward to a range of day and night interpretations through an array of layering options.

Tote bags
It’s time to store away your micro-mini bag for everyday wear as tote bags are making a comeback in a big way –– literally. While oversized proportions are still having their runway moment in an extreme, theatrical notion, we’re also starting to see this handbag trend in a more wearable execution and fresh silhouettes.

Goth Chic
In your Wednesday Addams era? So are your favourite fashion houses, including Rodarte, Adeam, and Willy Chavarria – as seen at NYFW through gothic, moody styles. Don’t forget to complete the look with smudgy eyeliner and a swipe of dark-coloured lipstick.

Leather Weather
Sure, leather for fall isn’t exactly ground-breaking — but expect to see unexpected takes on the buttery fabric. Fashion houses such as Dior at Paris Fashion Week showcased the fabric on different pieces and in different styles. With that said, leather is definitely the way this autumn.

Trail blazers
A blazer is the epitome of timeless. So rather than reinvent the wheel, brands honed in on exquisite tailoring and strong shoulders to create the ultimate suit jacket. The classic piece is guaranteed to take over autumn 2023.

This was fun. The “dresses over pants” look is something I definitely have to try this autumn ^^
