It would be disingenuous to discuss South African Hip Hop without mentioning the commentators and critics who tirelessly push the culture forward by brazenly telling us who’s hot in the streets through their digital platforms. One such maverick is content specialist, Kabelo Moremi, popularly known as Fratpacker, Big Frat, or NtateThuso wa di podcast, if you will.

A prominent voice in Mzansi’s youth and street culture, the multifaceted creator is one of the hosts of South African Hip Hop’s leading podcasts, The Sobering Pod. Since its formidable launch, the podcast has featured award-winning musicians such as K.O., Maglera Doe Boy Focalistic, and many more.

Moreover, Kabelo’s creative journey has earned him a long list of caps including music consultant and commissioning editor, among others.

To give our debut Previdar Travel edition an edge, we had a chat with Kabelo Moremi, the mother-loving conundrum, as he would describe himself,  who shared his road trip playlist, song of the summer, and more. A Hip Hop head at heart, it is no surprise that the genre is the melomaniac’s top pick for a travel playlist.

In your view, what makes a song good? Its lyrics, the beat, a combination of both, or something else?

What makes a good song for me is a combination of tangible things such as the artist, the beat and lyrics (depending on the genre of music), and the intangible feeling the song evokes.

Which music artists are dominating your playlist currently?

Black Sheriff, Wordz,  Larry June, Jordan Ward, Sampha, and Simulationrxps.

There were many great music releases this year. What is your song for the summer?

This is funny as my song for the summer is titled Summer by Wordz but I also can’t deny Horns In the Sun by DJ Kent and Thakzin.
