With summer being upon us, it’s time to swap out heavy moisturisers and cakey foundations for lightweight new beauty products that enhance your features and won’t melt down your face a few minutes after you head out the door. Foyin’s fail-safe tip for healthy and glowing skin this summer? Hydration!

One of the most important things for every skin type is hydration, and it’s especially important in the summer months when it’s so easy to get dehydrated overall. So I make sure to keep using some of my winter hydrators such as Snail Mucin and niacinamide, as well as making sure I drink at least 2 litres of water a day so that my skin is moisturised from the inside and out,” shares the beauty guru.

Foyin OG’s Beauty Picks for Summer

Dermopal SPF30 Moisturising Sunscreen
124, 00 ZAR

“While the sunscreen market has grown in the past few years (which I absolutely love), it’s difficult to find the balance between finding something dark-skin friendly and affordable at the same time. That’s where Dermopal and SwiitchBeauty come in: both are local brands, friendly for dark skin, and won’t entirely break the bank.”

Wishful Skin Honey Jelly Moisturiser

“When it comes to moisturisers, I prefer to keep things light, especially in the summer months. The Wishful Skin Honey Balm Jelly moisturiser is a great splurge and drives home the fact that I love a lightweight moisturiser for summer. On most days, though, I use the Cosrx Snail Mucin to hydrate my skin and top it off with a moisturising sunscreen before I leave the house.”

Summer is full of wonderful things — but melting foundation, smeared eyeliner and super-sticky lipstick are not among them. To avoid this makeup disaster, Foyin recommends a flawless setting routine to keep your makeup in place as you vacation the summer season away.

“It has to be my setting routine! In summer my philosophy is to either keep things super light or to go full out with the glam, so it’s either no makeup at all or maybe a light skin tint/stick paired with some brows and a half lash because I know I won’t be wearing makeup for long, or we have to wear our full coverage, matte complexion products, set them well and then lock it in with my multiple setting sprays. Most people would think that it would feel too heavy on the skin but it doesn’t! It boils down to technique and ensuring everything you apply is set well. But the true tea? I carry a portable fan everywhere with me. *laughs* If you stay ready, you don’t have to get ready.”

Lancome Teinte Idole Foundation
770, 00 ZAR

“There are many foundations I absolutely love, but in summer I either keep things light, using foundations such as the Maybelline Fit Me foundation or the Lancome Teinte Idole, or I go full matte and full coverage with the Huda Beauty Faux Filter or Maybelline Superstay Activewear foundation. I’m lucky to have a great foundation match in all of these and they have very inclusive shade ranges, as well as great coverage and staying power.”

Kay Yarms x Scarlet Hill

“When it comes to eyeshadow, I’m a simple girl with a penchant for the perfect nude, soft glam eye. And the perfect part about this is that you can find palettes at any price point to suit those needs! For example, the new Kay Yarms x Scarlet Hill beauty palette has the shades I love and it’s sized perfectly for palettes, and similarly, my heart beats for the Huda Beauty Empowered eyeshadow palette. On the more premium end, Huda includes these innovative jelly-type shadows that give you a bit of a more balmy or glossy look as opposed to just one-dimensional mattes on the lid.”

Fenty Gloss Bomb
840, 00 ZAR

“My go-to lip shade includes a dark brown liner, a more cool-toned nude lipstick, and clear gloss to bring it all together. My pro tip: don’t spend too much on a lip liner! I’ve been using the Essence Cosmetics Hot Chocolate eyeliner for years and it’s affordable and does the job. I mix that with a nude lippie from Maybelline, Revlon, Lancome, or Scarlet Hill and top it off with a Fenty Gloss bomb or Essence clear lipgloss. But if I only had to choose one? I’d probably go with the Fenty lip oil! I’m a big fan of lip oils for summer, as they feel a lot more comfortable than a gloss, especially on your no-makeup days.”

Urban Decay All Nighter Spray
960, 00 ZAR

“I believe that the true key to getting a flawless and long-lasting spray is using multiple setting and fixing sprays. I tend to do my face and base makeup before my eyes, so once I’ve set my face with powder, I spray a setting spray like the MAC Fix+ or Rimmel London setting spray just to melt all of my products together. At the end of my makeup, then I go in with stacking two fixing sprays to make sure my makeup is locked in and will remain throughout the sweat and dewiness of the day. While my heart yearns for my true GOAT, the Urban Decay All Nighter Spray, I love using the Maybelline Lasting Fix or Revlon Colorstay Lock Setting Mist as affordable alternatives, and I finish off with the Kryolan setting spray overtop.”

YSL Black Opium
2 100, 00 ZAR

“YSL Black Opium remains one of my staple fragrances, as I love how it smells on me and it works both in summer and winter.”

Bvlgari Allegra Baciami
4 810, 00 ZAR

“The Bvlgari Baciami fragrance is one that I would love to get my hands on for this summer – it’s absolutely delicious with its fragrant floral notes, while not being too strong or sweet either.”
