Multimedia content creator, model, and Digital Marketing student, Barbara Moagi describes herself as someone who is ready and equal to anything. With a background in engineering, the multi-hyphenate model made waves as a member of the national robotics team that not only broke the FGC world record but captured the attention of Walt Disney, receiving their prestigious award for innovation and creativity. A milestone she reached at the young of 17-years-old.
Having been featured in prestigious publications such as Forbes Africa in her matric year, Barbara’s star has only continued to rise. As a Miss SA Top 30 Finalist for 2023, the 23-year-old is no stranger to the spotlight, but beyond the glitz and glamour, she embodies a fervent commitment to pursuing her dreams with audacity, all while championing the empowerment of others to embrace their own aspirations. Her ultimate mission? To see women everywhere rise and claim their victories, breaking barriers and defying limitations with unyielding determination.
We had a chat with Barbara where she shared her favourite things ranging from a fabulous pair of heels to content creation which is one of her passions.
Beauty Products
Growing up my mom was (and still is) the most beautiful woman I knew and one thing she never compromised on was skincare, perfume, and a good lipstick. Lip Kits were made popular by Kylie just in time for my 16th birthday and I was so stoked that my Mom allowed me to get one. Fast forward 7 years later and I have an extensive makeup kit with blush and bronzer being at the top of my favourite things!
A Fabulous Pair of Heels
Anyone who knows me knows that I will suffer through a pair of heals for aesthetics.*laughs* I love the feeling of confidence and put-togetherness that comes with a dazzling heel. My first pair of heels was a rose gold Steve Madden for the matric dance and ironically my current favourite is my Rose Gold Breslin Blush Bonang Select from Steve Madden, a guaranteed showstopper!
Dark-Skinned Women in Media
One of the things that really shaped my self-image and confidence was, and I know this sounds cliché, seeing women who looked like me be hot and celebrated on TV and even my social media timeline. Seeing them rock bold lip colours or wear statement clothing pieces was like seeing a reflection of what I could be if I dared to own my skin! I just love the affirmation of beauty that they give me.
Eccentric Hairdos
Before I was allowed to own makeup or perfume, my hair was my primary source of beauty exploration. I always wanted to have a different and cool hairstyle which is probably how I ended up learning how to style my own hair! Now I am bolder in my self-expression and this new pixie cut is my favourite look so far!
Music
My biggest envy is not being able to turn how I feel into a song because I cannot make music to save my life. Nothing can transform my mood or outlook on the future like a good song, so I really appreciate the gifted individuals who can take the groanings of my heart and turn them into melodies. My favourite playlist is a mix of Hle Ntombela, Khaya Mthethwa, Claudia Isaki and We Will Worship!
Self-Development Content
Whether it’s a book like “The Gifts of Imperfection” by Brené Brown, a podcast like The Future with Chris Do and Think Media on Marketing and Personal Branding, or a replay of the sermon from Sunday — I often feel my time doing chores, exercising or driving someplace far is best bought back with transformational content for my soul, my knowledge and relationships.
Creating Content
One of my key motivators as a content creator is giving my audience a break from their everyday worries and creating a space online where they feel like they have a fun friend, who not only entertains but champions them in following their dreams and overcoming their internal battles that often come with that journey. From the mini makeup tutorials and outfit inspos to the pep talks about pursuing purpose on The Boldy Becoming Podcast. I want to help alleviate over thinkers and perfectionists into unstoppable achievers who have full confidence in God’s plan for their lives!
Quiet Time
As a content creator, amongst the many other roles I play, my life can often feel “on the go”. One of my favourite things, in fact, I look forward to this, is a quiet Monday. This time is often used to reflect on my week and journal to my heart’s content. This is also the time I use to dream and envision God’s wildest dream for my life. Filling my cup allows me to be effective in the world, and I have seen the effects of going without my quiet Monday.
My Loved Ones
As I grow older, I have learned to appreciate my family and make the effort to show up for those near me while making an effort to build with those further from me. Equally, my friends and boyfriend feel like a big hug from God. I have no words to describe my deep appreciation for the people in my life because I am nothing without them.
A Virgin Mojito or delicious Coke
This is my summertime go-to! I am yet to dabble in the world of alcoholic beverages because these two drinks are summertime perfection. I love a good limey mojito with just the right amount of sweetness, it pairs perfectly with sushi and feels like a beautiful palate cleanser in between meals. You absolutely cannot go wrong with a cold glass of Coke or virgin mojito!
