There’s a quiet power in knowing who you are and an even louder one in declaring it. For Johannesburg-born artist KLA (pronounced “Kayla”), her new single In My Way is more than just a return to music; it’s a bold reintroduction. Blending pop, R&B, soul, and African rhythms, the singer-songwriter brings emotional honesty, commanding presence, and a modern edge to everything she touches.

Since stepping into the spotlight in 2019 with her debut single Nobody’s Looking, KLA has grown into a true multi-hyphenate force: singer, model, content creator, speaker—and now, a young woman moving with intention. Her journey through self-discovery, love, and resilience is embedded in every lyric, every look, every carefully curated moment of her brand.

In this exclusive with Previdar, KLA opens up about growth, grounding, and the power of showing up fully. From her evolving sound to her mission of empowering the next generation of women, she is clear on one thing: she’s no longer just finding her voice—she’s owning it.

Congratulations on In My Way! It feels like such a powerful statement. What personal experiences shaped the making of this anthem, and why did now feel like the right time for your musical return?

When I first heard In My Way, I knew it was the perfect song to reintroduce myself—not just as a musician, but as a woman. I started out releasing music as a young, inexperienced girl. Now, I’ve lived, I’ve learned, and I’ve grown. This comeback feels deeply personal. It’s about stepping into my power with clarity and confidence. Returning to music was never a matter of if, but when. I needed time and space to grow—not just as an artist, but as a woman. Now, with a team that truly understands the vision and moves with the same purpose, the timing finally feels right. I’m ready to share music that’s honest, elevated, and entirely me.

Style is such a powerful form of self-expression. How would you describe your personal style right now, and how has fashion played a role in your evolution?

Style has always been how I speak without words. Right now, I’d describe mine as eclectic and feminine, influenced by the soft strength of 90s and early 2000s icons. Fashion has helped me evolve emotionally and creatively. Dressing up brings me joy—it’s a way of storytelling through fabric. I usually style myself, but even when I collaborate with a stylist, I stay very hands-on. I love playing with silhouettes, textures, and colours that match the season I’m in.

As a content creator and model, you’re constantly in front of the camera. What are your non-negotiables when it comes to skincare, beauty rituals, and feeling your most confident self?

Self-care is my foundation. Skincare is non-negotiable—especially with my acne-prone skin and how often I wear makeup on set. I’ve done the research and now only use products that hydrate, protect, and keep my skin glowing. The gym is also essential. It keeps me fit, focused, and mentally grounded. Confidence for me is about comfort and expression—feeling good in what I wear, how I look, and how I show up.

Health and wellness are at the heart of modern artistry. What practices, mental, emotional, or physical, keep you grounded and energised?

Prayer always comes first. Staying grateful—even during challenges—helps me stay centered. I make time for loved ones, stay active, and protect my mental space by being intentional with how I treat myself. I also love listening to podcasts and audiobooks. They give me fresh perspective and push me to try new things and continue evolving.

You’ve spoken about empowerment and resilience through your music. How do you maintain self-belief when navigating the ups and downs of the entertainment industry?

Self-belief has to come first. If you don’t believe in your gift, no one else will. I remind myself constantly that I’m not here by accident. Talent is a gift, and the best way to honour it is to keep showing up, improving, and trusting that every step is part of the journey. Even in hard times, I know that growth is happening.

Growing up, who were the women—famous or personal—who shaped your ideas of strength, beauty, and success?

My grandmother and my mother are my anchors. They taught me to persevere with grace and self-awareness. In the world of entertainment, I’ve always admired women like Sade, Beyoncé, Aaliyah, and Halle Berry. They’re soft yet strong, feminine yet powerful. They’ve deeply shaped how I see beauty and success—and that quiet confidence they have is something I carry with me as KLA today.

You embody the modern multi-hyphenate—singer, model, creator, speaker. How has embracing all your passions shaped the woman you are today?

It’s been freeing. I no longer feel pressure to choose one lane. Embracing all my passions—music, beauty, fashion, content—has made me more confident and resilient. Competing in pageants and auditioning from a young age taught me early that rejection is part of the process. A ‘no’ is never the end—it’s just a cue to keep evolving. All those experiences have shaped me into someone who’s fearless and multifaceted.

How does Johannesburg, the city you were born in, influence your creativity, your energy, and your sense of identity?

Jozi is electric. It’s fast-paced, creative, and full of life. Growing up here gave me a dynamic energy and a deep sense of ambition. Being surrounded by so many cultures and stories shaped my identity. Johannesburg taught me to hustle, to dream big, and to always stay grounded in who I am. It’s the perfect city for a creative.

In My Way feels like a declaration of stepping fully into your power. Beyond music, what other dreams or projects are you manifesting this year?

Yes, In My Way is me stepping into my power—and this year, I want to channel that into helping others. I’m especially passionate about empowering young girls and women with the skills they need to be self-sufficient. From doing their own hair and makeup, to interview skills, affordable education, learning to drive, self-defence—I want to create a platform or programme that gives them tools for confidence and independence. That’s the dream.

If you could leave young women—especially those building careers in beauty, fashion, or entertainment—with one piece of advice, what would it be?

Make sure your passion is truly yours—not just a response to what’s trending. Do the research. Understand your industry. Build something sustainable and fulfilling. This isn’t just about the spotlight—it’s about longevity, purpose, and being proud of what you create, even when no one’s watching.
