At just 21, Ayakha Ntunja is stepping into her spotlight with intention, grace, and a gaze that speaks volumes. The Youngins breakout star has quickly become one of the most exciting new faces on South African TV, and it’s not hard to see why. Whether she’s embodying the layered emotions of high schooler Amo or advocating for mental health and creativity off-screen, Ayakha is doing it all with softness, strength, and serious star power.

From theatre stages to national screens, and now the hearts of Gen Z audiences, she’s making her mark on her own terms. In this Youth Month spotlight, Ayakha opens up about the power of storytelling, discovering her voice through acting, and why this generation is ready to lead — not later, but now.

1. What’s one thing you wish older generations understood about Gen Z?

They often think we’re just lazy, but we’re actually advocates for mental health and balance. And we are pushing boundaries in areas we want to one day take over.

2. If your current energy were a TikTok sound, what would it be?

It’s actually from a movie called Uptown Girls:

“Take a look around, do you see her anywhere? News flash — you’re not gonna.”

3. You’ve got a billboard in the heart of Joburg CBD. What does it say?

“Dream big, live boldly, your vibe attracts your tribe!”

4. Who’s your Youth Day icon—past or present—and why?

I would say my Youth Day icon would be Ntokozo Mlaba. He is a filmmaker, writer, director, social activist, and cultural producer across the board — and an amazing human. He does wonderful social work and impact programmes through a non-profit organisation (NPO) called Umphakathi Artists. His voice for film and creatives grows each day.

5. Describe the South Africa you’re building—using just three emojis.

🌍❤️✊

6. What’s your ultimate local flex—something proudly South African you’ll always brag about?

Our Amapiano sound is taking over the world; we’re setting trends. I love our traditional attire — it’s been growing beautiful brands like Khosi Nkosi and Maxhosa, just to name a few. We continue to bring the world closer to South Africa.

7. Tell us about a moment you thought: “Yoh, I’m actually who I think I am.”

When I saw people resonate with my story on social media, it hit me that my voice matters — and just getting to bond and chat with people who engage in my art.

8. How do you stay soft and sane in a world that’s doing the most?

I prioritise my mental health with nature walks, journaling, spending time with loved ones, and watching a good movie.

9. Finish this sentence: “The youth of 2025 aren’t just woke—we’re also ______.”

“I am constantly evolving, and every day is a new chance to grow.”
