With its velvet ropes, glinting glasses, and impeccably dressed crowd, the Hyde Park Forum was the very picture of elegance on the opening night of South African Fashion Week. But this year, opulence whispered rather than shouted. Hosted by CRUZ Vodka, the evening’s moodboard was unmistakably chic: “quiet luxury” – and guests rose to the occasion in sartorial symphonies of subtlety and refinement.

The dress code called for polish over pomp, and the city’s fashion elite responded with elevated minimalism: think immaculate tailoring, fine fabrics, and an absence of overt logos. Sumptuous silks, butter-soft cashmeres, and monochromatic palettes reigned supreme, punctuated by statement accessories in gold, oxblood and midnight. There was an art to it all – a celebration of restraint that felt both global and uniquely Joburg.

Among the soirée’s standout guests was celebrity stylist Phupho Gumede, whose ensemble echoed the DNA of quiet luxury—minimalist and timeless. Broadcaster and style star Kim Jayde brought her signature charisma to the room, wearing a stylish velvet dress with daring open sides. Meanwhile, K Naomi, DJ Sabby, and the ever-glamorous Yaya Mavundla turned heads in looks that balanced heritage with haute edge.

The guest list read like a who’s who of South Africa’s style set. Zanele Potelwa brought an effortless grace to the carpet, while Big Brother Mzansi winner Khosi Twala proved why she’s become a darling of the fashion circuit. Digital tastemakers Sabelo The Kreator and Zithobe Macheli offered contemporary takes on the theme, fusing muted tones with tailored silhouettes and considered layering.

Designers Msukisi Mbane of IMPRINT and Nompumelelo of Ezokhetho – both champions of South African sartorial storytelling – delivered with looks that referenced their brands’ ethos while aligning seamlessly with the evening’s theme. In a room full of fashion-forward thinkers, their presence underscored the power of local design to navigate and reinterpret global fashion codes.

As the evening unfolded, CRUZ Vodka’s signature cocktails flowed freely – mixed with precision and style, much like the looks on show. The energy was electric, with the likes of Lamiez Holworthy and DJ Tinuke on the decks, setting the rhythm for a night of fashion-fuelled celebration.

More than just a party, the CRUZ Vodka SA Fashion Week Opening Night cemented its role as a cultural calendar staple – one that not only spotlights excellence in fashion, but reflects the shifting style mood of the times. Quiet luxury isn’t just a trend; it’s a mindset. And this celebration captured its spirit to perfection.

As SA Fashion Week kicks off in full swing, one thing is certain: the bar has been set. And it’s wrapped in a camel coat, carrying a clutch, and wearing a pair of beautifully understated slingbacks.
