I embarked on a transformative journey to the picturesque island of Saint Lucia. The allure of this Caribbean gem captivated me, and my adventure unfolded over a total of 9 days, with 5 idyllic days spent in Saint Lucia and an additional 4 days dedicated to the round trip.
The logistics of this extensive trip were entrusted to a travel consultant, given its time-sensitive nature. Opting for Qatar Airways, my expedition kicked off with an 8-hour and 30-minute flight from OR Tambo to the vibrant city of Doha. From there, a connecting flight transported me to the bustling metropolis of New York (JFK) in a journey spanning 14 hours and 35 minutes. A 24-hour layover in the heart of New York City became a delightful interlude, allowing me to reunite with friends and soak in the city’s energy.
My onward journey to Saint Lucia was aboard JetBlue Airways from JFK, a 4-hour and 35-minute flight that seamlessly connected me to the Caribbean paradise. Having traversed North America multiple times, I’ve become accustomed to navigating through layovers and transits, a privilege facilitated by the convenience of my Canadian passport, which affords me the opportunity to explore cities during layovers without the need for visas.
This sojourn marked my second foray into the Caribbean, reminiscent of a visit to Jamaica seven years prior. Striking similarities between the two islands, from the humid and sunny weather to the architectural charm and vibrant street life, evoked fond memories of my time in Jamaica. Recognizing that the Caribbean cultures draw inspiration from their African roots added depth to my appreciation of the shared characteristics.
In my view, fostering a great travel experience involves embracing the unexpected. While meticulous planning is essential, approaching each journey with an open mind allows for a richer and more fulfilling exploration.
As an experienced travel and destination wedding photographer, my approach is to arrive at the destination a minimum of 2 days before any assignment. This strategic time frame grants me the comfort and flexibility to conduct a thorough reconnaissance of the location, plan the photoshoot meticulously, and, crucially, factor in any potential disruptions such as flight delays.
Saint Lucia left an indelible mark on my travel repertoire, with its standout feature being the impeccably clean city streets. Despite the hot and humid weather, characteristic of any Caribbean destination, the overall experience surpassed expectations, making it a destination I am eager to revisit for leisure rather than work.
The Royalton Saint Lucia, an Autograph Collection All-Inclusive Resort in Gros Islet, served as my sanctuary during this sojourn. Located approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes from Hewanorra International Airport, the resort proved to be a haven of luxury. The prospect of returning for a leisurely holiday, untethered from work obligations, lingers enticingly in my plans.

Day 1: Arriving at Hewanorra International Airport at 1:30 pm, a Nexus shuttle ferried me to the Royalton Saint Lucia in Gros Islet. The absence of Ubers in Saint Lucia heightened the uniqueness of the journey. The 2-hour drive afforded me the luxury of a personalized tour by the driver as we traversed other towns on our way to the resort. Upon checking into my spectacular room, I indulged in room service and savored the beach, eventually meeting up with clients for a delightful dinner.
Day 2: Greeted by a glorious sunrise, I relished a delectable buffet breakfast before embarking on a reconnaissance mission of the resort and the beach, meticulously planning the upcoming wedding photoshoot. The day unfolded in the company of my clients and the wedding party, basking in the sun at their private cabana by the pools near the beach. The evening concluded with a captivating entertainment session provided by the resort.
Day 3: The much-anticipated wedding day arrived, staged against the backdrop of the ocean docks, commencing an hour before sunset. My lens captured the bride and groom preparing for their nuptials, and the intimate ceremony unfolded flawlessly with 60 guests. The celebration spilled into a reception held outdoors, where the newlyweds, guests, and families reveled until midnight.
Day 4: After a well-deserved rest following the exhaustive day of photographing the wedding, I embarked on a taxi journey to Castries, the capital of Saint Lucia, a mere 20-minute drive from the resort. The city, abuzz with tourists attending the Saint Lucia Jazz Festival headlined by renowned musicians Sting and Shaggy, offered a vibrant canvas for my lens. Returning to the resort, I partook in dinner and shared moments with newfound friends.
Day 5: The final day unfolded with a leisurely sojourn on the resort’s beach, a perfect prelude to the Friday night spectacle awaiting in Gros Islet. The fishing village came alive with its famed street party, the Fish Fry. As the narrow streets filled with locals and tourists alike, I meandered through the vibrant scenes, capturing the essence of the festivities. Engaging with street vendors, savoring local fish dishes, and reveling in the spirited atmosphere, I bid farewell to Saint Lucia in the company of fellow travelers, marking the end of a remarkable journey.
