We had a chat with Cindy Khan about her entrepreneurial journey, milestones she’s proud of, future aspirations, and more!

When did your journey in beauty content creation begin and what inspired it?

I have always been into beauty and personal care but my love grew when I discovered beauty content creators both locally & internationally, such as Sophiology & Mihlali Ndamase who taught me how to do my very first full face of makeup. I became keen on practising and using my newfound skills in the beauty content creation space to provide budget-friendly makeup product alternatives.

From being a beauty digital creator, you ventured into entrepreneurship and started your own hair business, Luna Lux. Tell us more about that.

I was doing quite a few collaborations with hair brands such as Alipearl Hair and other Aliexpress brands who were sending me wigs to review. As this proceeded, people kept asking me how I made the hair look so good and this inspired me to start my own brand that comes with hair that is ready to wear. The name was inspired by a cat my grandfather got me when I was 6, named Luna. My grandfather always pushed me the best version of myself in everything I do and this was my first step into what I do. Lux is for luxury because I only offer the best.

Luna Lux has grown over the past few years and now offers different colours of hair, as well as accessories. Which milestone are you most proud of having accomplished as the founder?

My proudest accomplishment is the reach my business has had and the mere fact that in the early stages of the business, it was trending on social media for its quality, aesthetics & approach to clients and this has only gotten better ever since & is a continuous proudest accomplishment.

What has been most challenging about being an entrepreneur?

Consistency & being able to put my best foot forward all the time is challenging sometimes. Even on my hardest days, I have to put my problems aside and put my business first.

What would you say sets Luna Lux apart from other hair businesses?

I wear the products I sell and so the quality is consistent & guaranteed. I wouldn’t mislead my customers into thinking that they are buying from someone who doesn’t represent their own brand and product by buying from other brands. My aim with Luna Lux is also to make people feel like the best versions of themselves instead of making them feel like they need to wear wigs to look or feel good. Wigs are an extension of the people, an accessory. They are not our identities.

What are your interests aside from entrepreneurship?

I am very interested in fashion. Since my youth, I have wanted to learn more about fashion and venture further into the industry, since hair is a part of fashion.  I am also interested in the artistic, as well as the dance spaces. The life I envision for myself includes fashion shows, theatre performances, and art galleries around the world and this is something I am working towards. I am also interested in data and technology, I coded my own website for Luna Lux and I work in tech. I’d like to further this career and eventually do a lot more with it.

What advice do you have for young people who aspire to become entrepreneurs like yourself?

My advice to young aspiring entrepreneurs is to find their niche, capitalise on it, chase it until it begins and then chase it even harder once the business has been established. Don’t let people’s opinions stunt your growth.

When prompted about her future aspirations for Luna Luna Lux hair, Cindy shared that she wanted the business to grow beyond her wildest dreams with multiple franchises across the globe. The young entrepreneur also advised wig lovers to be on the lookout for more from the luxury hair business!
