Few makeup artists have captured the beauty world’s attention quite like Ngozi Esther Edeme, better known as Painted By Esther. Known for her vibrant use of colour, signature blush placements and transformative celebrity looks, the British-Nigerian artist has become one of the most sought-after names in beauty. Through a two-day masterclass hosted by NYX Professional Makeup in Johannesburg, South African beauty lovers were given a rare opportunity to learn directly from the artist behind some of Tyla’s most memorable beauty moments, as well as looks worn by Naomi Campbell, Viola Davis and Doechii.

The event brought together media, influencers, professional makeup artists and everyday beauty enthusiasts eager to experience the techniques behind some of social media’s most viral beauty looks. From product discovery stations to live demonstrations, the masterclass offered attendees an immersive look into the world of Painted By Esther.

The experience was led by NYX Vice President of Brand Marketing and Community, Erika Guinn, and NYX Global Brand President, Denee Peterson, both of whom joined Edeme on stage for an intimate conversation about artistry, creativity and the future of beauty. Their presence underscored the brand’s investment in creating meaningful educational experiences for beauty communities around the world.

During the discussion, Peterson praised Edeme’s unique approach to makeup artistry and her ability to push creative boundaries. Reflecting on the artist’s work, Peterson said, “I’ve not seen talent like that. I mean, the playing with colours.” She went on to describe Edeme as an artist whose work represents the kind of creativity and innovation the beauty industry needs more of.

Before stepping into the beauty industry, Edeme worked as a nurse caring for cancer patients. While she found fulfilment in helping others, she eventually felt called to pursue a different path.

Today, that decision has transformed her into one of beauty’s most influential artists, with a distinctive style that blends technical skill with fearless creativity.

Speaking on stage, Edeme shared insights into the process behind her now-famous celebrity transformations, revealing that every look begins long before a brush touches the skin.

“I start by looking through their entire Instagram profile,” she explained. “I want to find their best pictures and understand what I think is the most elevated version of them.”

It is this attention to detail that has helped define her work. Rather than following trends, Edeme focuses on enhancing what already makes each person unique, creating looks that feel both artistic and personal.

While many artists rely on meticulous planning, Edeme credits intuition as one of the most important tools in her creative process.

“I’m very Type B. I don’t know how to plan. I just let God guide me,” she told attendees.

That instinctive approach was on full display during the live demonstration, where she transformed model Nomazizi Phakamile using a selection of NYX Professional Makeup products.

As guests watched closely, Edeme walked them through her signature blush technique, one of the most recognisable elements of her work. Using multiple shades to create dimension and movement, she demonstrated how strategic placement can completely transform the face.

“You sit the brush right on top of your cheekbone,” she explained. “Your more muted shade should always just live on the outer part of your face, and the fun shades live in the centre.”

The demonstration showcased the artistry behind what many perceive as a simple beauty trend. Layering colour, shimmer and highlight, Edeme created a multidimensional look that embodied the bold, playful aesthetic that has become synonymous with her name.

Beyond the techniques and product recommendations, the masterclass highlighted NYX Professional Makeup’s commitment to nurturing beauty communities and creating opportunities for education. The event also featured conversations with local makeup professionals, creating a platform for knowledge-sharing between global and South African talent.

Throughout the two days, attendees were treated to beauty showcases, interactive experiences and candid conversations about creativity, career growth and artistry. Edeme also shared stories from her journey, including the revelation that her first celebrity clients were singer Ari Lennox and rapper Drake.

As the event drew to a close, she offered a glimpse into what lies ahead. With an exciting slate of projects on the horizon, including continuing her work with Tyla, Edeme hinted that fans should keep a close eye on her next moves.

“I’ll be going on tour with Tyla when she drops her sophomore album A-Pop,” she shared. “That’s very exciting and you guys should definitely be on the lookout for that.”

For those in attendance, however, the highlight was less about what comes next and more about witnessing one of beauty’s most influential artists share her expertise in real time. Through colour, creativity and confidence, Painted By Esther reminded guests that makeup is more than a routine. It’s a form of self-expression, storytelling and artistry.
