With 20th-century origins, lyrical abstraction is an artistic movement that has stood the test of time. Spearheaded by Russian painter, Wassily Kandinsky who is widely regarded as “the father of Abstraction”, the art form emerged as a reaction to cubism and surrealism. Inspired by its origins and poeticism, Leo’s latest work comprises one of his masterly paintings as its backdrop, with models draped in assorted chic garments.

“Abstraction Lyrique is a magnificent masterpiece that defies constriction. It is intuitional and free. The photoshoot seems spontaneous, yet well executed. Moreover, it is blissfully free of intellectual drudgery. Its colour choices and methods have artistic, natural sensibility to them. The vibe of the work is calming, whimsical, emotional and unrestrained.

The Italian lensman’s photoshoot ushers in with a picturesque image of fashion model Laye Dabi, stunning in a tropical Kimono trench from luxury fashion brand, Simon Cracker’s 2024 Spring/ Summer collection. Adhering to the artistic theme of the shoot, the model is adorned with hot pink face paint on his cheeks. His contradictory stylistic approach symbolises rebellion and audacious boldness – both of which are integral characteristics of lyrical abstraction.

Similar to historical lyrical abstracts, “Abstraction Lirique” showcases aspects of being imaginative, emotive, expressive, passionate, and subjective. It is characterised by its use of various expressive colourways that pristinely convey emotions and abstract concepts. The work of art creates an atmosphere that evokes deep feelings that are a reflection of the ambivalent human experience.
Veering from his often futuristic fashion choices, the photographer’s “Abstraction Lirique” explores a vintage style approach, tying it perfectly to the theme of lyrical abstraction. The models in his latest masterpiece are donned with lush fabrics, styled by fashion connoisseur, Dani Marie Bordignon.

Aside from the stylistic twist, the cinematic photoshoot stays true to Leo’s vision: visualising art in all its nuanced historic and futuristic contexts.
